Puttin’ Lipstick on a Pig—and Loving Every Minute of It

Some people see an old car door, a stack of leftover bricks, and a tired spot in the yard. I see the beginning of something.

I have never believed beauty has to wait for everything to be new, expensive, finished, or matching. Sometimes you work with what you have, add flowers, move the bricks around fifteen times, and put a little lipstick on the whole situation.

Use What You Own

Before buying anything for a porch, booth, party, or room, I shop my own house first. Look for:

• An old container that can hold flowers.
• Bricks, stones, or boards that can define a little area.
• A forgotten chair or table that needs a new purpose.
• Something funny or personal that makes the space unmistakably yours.

The best spaces are not the ones that look as though nobody lives there. They have a story, a little age, a little humor, and at least one thing that makes a visitor say, “Where in the world did you get that?”

Perfect Is Not the Goal

This garden corner is not a formal landscape plan. It is a collection of things I love, things I saved, and things I decided could still be useful. That is exactly why it has personality.

You can spend a fortune trying to purchase character, but real character usually comes from time, imagination, and refusing to throw away the interesting piece.

So yes, sometimes I am putting lipstick on a pig. But honey, if the flowers are blooming and the lipstick is hot pink, I call that progress.
